Yahoo! buys del.icio.us and validates tagging
Today Yahoo! announced that they have acquired del.icio.us, the popular social bookmarking site. The basic message from Yahoo! and the market is that tagging, at least in a social context, is a big deal and very important. Tagging has become the logical sister of search and with Yahoo! taking a strong position through Flickr and del.icio.us. Among the areas that people have been pushing for is extending desktop search to provide a tagging evironment. For example, one Google Desktop user wrote in the Google Desktop Search discussion forums:
Can Google Desktop be a desktop del.icio.us?
What Viapoint delivers to the user is a del.icio.us extension beyond search for your desktop. You can tag any item and it can appear in multiple locations on your virtual folders. Future features will include more collaboration but the most important feature is already there, being able to rapidly tag desktop content of any type quickly and efficiently. It is encouraging to our team to see the investment and scooping-up of the tagging players working on leading areas and we expect that more attention will soon be paid to tagging on the desktop.
