Ojo / Riya tagging service for photos
As the father of a newborn baby I have been madly taking photos for about six weeks but I also have a large photo library. Among my hopes for an ideal photo organizer is to have the organizer use facial recognition to tag the photos. A company called Ojo has built a web site called Riya and an accompanying photo organizing product called Riya . It looks like it very recently was launched (November 18th) and is still in alpha testing but the idea is something that hopefully will be functional enough to tag photographs effectively for organizational purposes. While at Viapoint a photo organizer is not as valuable as a text organizer the user interface is quite interesting because it is a way of overlaying the photo with suspected faces and text that can then be added as tags for the photo. This interface may be useful as well for extracting textual information to train a system to process email, documents, and chats for context. For example - maybe names are highlighted and the name itself if mentioned (Dan) or (Viapoint) or (Google) could be applied as a tag from a document having extracted it. While this may seem strange to do when a full text search is available but the ideas of tagging are to provide a more limited universe to search on so that context is possible. For example I tag in my personal blog items relating to fatherhood. The text may ever even mention the word father but the contents relate to that topic. So someone can do a search in a blog search engine or just view content in a tool like Technorati that is based on tags that is limited to that subject area. So tagging is important for a personal knowledge management system like Viapoint where context of information like a partnership, a sales account, a key PR contact should be applied to make it easy to do work and share information. But the big news is that photos are joining the world of automatically tagged content and it is something that is going to make a lot of amateur photographers and people trying to collect photos of their products in use very happy.
