I found it - now what? Post action searches make X1 stand out
I have been looking at the latest version of X1 today. I hadn't looked at the GUI in a few months and having looked at a number of the desktop search tools I have some areas that are very interesting and powerful that give X1 some advantages over the other search tools even in a personal edition. The area that struck me as very useful today is the post search action toolbar. While other tools assume that finding the document or email that you are looking for is the final objective X1 understands that finding the item is just a piece of work that you might do as a part of your overall workflow. To facilitate working after you find an item you can do a number of actions in the post search action toolbar. My personal favorites are the ones that people might not be able to get to from launching the item itself and thus giving the search tool more power than even the application. An example of this is to go to the folder that contains a file. The idea would be that you may wish to reorganize the contents of that folder or look at the file system itself to navigate to the folders beneath the folder with the item. Another powerful post-search action is in email to copy items to a folder or to a PST. This allows a user to create a custom PST from a search result and then be able to use it in the future for other purposes or share it with peers.
If the Viapoint organizer could borrow a single concept from X1 it would be the idea that the list of actions after the user finds an item is the important thing in finding an item as just finding the items can occur in a number of ways but doing something useful for working afterwards is a different question.
